NewsARBORIST AID SPRINGSIDE LANDMARK On Friday, April 30, 2010, three Dutchess County commercial tree care companies brought certified arborists and equipment to the Springside to remove trees, prune branches, and do other work to care for important tree specimens. The companies are: Red Cedar Tree & Landscaping Inc, Craig Kurkela Arborist, Inc. and Integral Tree and Landscape, Inc. Using bucket trucks, large chipping machines, chain saws and other equipment, these tree experts improved the condition of individual trees as well as the broader landscape. The Arborists for Preservation program at Springside has been an effective means of caring for the rich variety of important trees on the site, many dating to the days of A.J. Downing. "The spirit of volunteerism of these tree experts has made it possible for us to take better care of this magnificent natural, historic and cultural resource in our midst," said John Mylod, president of the Board of Springside Landscape Restoration. "Arbor Day is such a fitting time for commercial arborists and others who will be volunteering on the site to pay special attention to the importance of the trees at Springside and we are extremely grateful," Mylod said. The "Arborists for Preservation" was conceived and developed by the late Randy Harwood, the long-time chair of the Site Committee of the Board of Directors of Springside Landscape Restoration.
